I totally thought it was Chinese when I first looked at it! 🙂 This seems like the original inspiration of 8-bit pixel art.

It is definitely of Chinese inspiration, it’s also nicknamed “The Big Chinese” (the thing is nine meters tall). And yes, it predates 8-bit pixel art by about 120/130 years 😉
